LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan environmental regulators are looking for advice on where to direct their efforts to measure surface water quality.
The Department of Environmental Quality is carrying out a plan to assess the condition of the state's waters and determine whether standards are being met. Other goals include evaluating the effectiveness of water protection programs and detecting new and emerging pollution threats.
The DEQ says it already has chosen the watersheds that will attract most of its monitoring resources during the 2015 fiscal year. But it still welcomes suggestions from cities, nonprofit groups and individual citizens.
Among characteristics that could be studied include sediment chemistry, fish contamination, fish or small invertebrate communities, nuisance aquatic plant or algae growth and E. coli bacteria.
