ALGER COUNTY, MI (AP)--   An annual summer program that gives youngsters firsthand knowledge about Lake Superior wraps up Thursday with a field trip to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and a fish boil.

The Alger County Michigan State University Extension's Life of Lake Superior program has taught about the impact of Lake Superior on science, history, arts, culture and the economy for 14 years. The free program shows youths age 9 to 14 the many careers centered on the lakes.

Last week students went to Grand Island, where they learned about invasive species and careers dedicated to stopping them. At Pictured Rocks they will hike and hear how the park service keeps the area pristine for thousands of people who visit annually.
