Problems arise with online absentee ballot applications

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Michigan's elections bureau is warning clerks about problems with a Democratic Party program that lets voters apply online for absentee ballots.

The bureau alerted election administrators late Monday that clerks are getting applications for voters who don't live in their jurisdiction. The memo obtained by The Associated Press also says they're receiving duplicates, applications without signatures and signatures that don't match records.

The bureau within Republican Secretary of State Ruth Johnson's office said the issues "raise concerns with the program's accuracy and reliability and place unsuspecting voters in jeopardy of being disenfranchised."

The Michigan Democratic Party last week expanded statewide the program launched earlier in Detroit and other cities in an effort to increase voting in November. The state says it was "unapproved."
