Power back on for Western U.P. residents

ONTONAGON, MI--   It’s been a long, tiring few days, but Upper Peninsula Power Company says electricity has been restored to nearly every customer in the Western U.P.

More than 20,000 customers lost power during early morning thunderstorms last Thursday.  High winds toppled trees and lines and lightning contributed to the chaos.  Officials say the Twin Lakes and Jacobsville areas in Houghton County and the lakeshore near Ontonagon were hardest hit.  Some residences will need electrical work before power can be restored.

Power is also back at six Michigan state parks; however, several areas at Porcupine Mountains State Park remain closed because of last week’s thunderstorms and recent flooding.

DNR Fire officers had to use chainsaws to get into Emily Lake State Forest Campground in Houghton County.  No injuries were reported.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
