Portions of Porkies park reopen

PORCUPINE MOUNTAINS STATE PARK, MI--   The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says several cabins and campsites at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park have reopened.

The Lake Superior and Big Carp cabins and ten backcountry campsite were closed following flash flooding from a thunderstorm that dumped as much as 11 inches of rain on the area.

Several park features do remain closed, however. The Speaker’s Cabin, located on the western end of the park, was moved 12 feet away from Speaker's Creek Tuesday. Flooding undercut the banks along the creek, chewing away nearly ten feet of shoreline near the cabin.

Campsite No. 36 at the Presque Isle Campground is closed permanently. Floodwaters collapsed the sides of a stream bank, which undermined a steep embankment situated next to the campsite.

At the Union Bay Campground, on the eastern end of the park, a yurt is set to reopen Friday. The roof of the structure was blown off during a July 21 windstorm.

Emily Lake State Forest Campground remains closed indefinitely.

DNR crews continue to clear fallen trees from trails throughout the park.
