Plea deal set for women who tried to give inmate drugs

HOUGHTON, MI--   Two women have secured plea deals after they were charged with trying to pass drugs to an inmate at the Houghton County Jail.

Sarah McMahon, 35, of Laurium, and Jamie Ekdahl, 29, of Calumet were arrested April 20 after a court hearing.  They allegedly tried to pass prescription medication to the inmate as he was being escorted by a deputy back to jail.  Ekdahl apparently dropped the opioids and the deputy found them.

Both women pleaded guilty last week to attempted delivery of a controlled substance.  Charges of delivery of a controlled substance and furnishing contraband to prisoners were dropped.

McMahon and Ekdahl will be sentenced within a month.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
