Picking up the pieces at ALTRAN

MUNISING, MI--   Officials say the ALTRAN garage in Munising is a total loss, following a fire that began Wednesday night and lasted almost ten hours.

They’re evaluating the condition of ten buses that were in the garage and trying to figure out how to accommodate the usual 300 riders per day.  Bus service was shut down Thursday so the scene could be assessed.

Escanaba and Manistique are loaning ALTRAN three buses, and the transit system will be temporarily housed at the LMAS building in AuTrain.  Officials say they hope to have buses running next week, but are working now to get four people who need dialysis to Marquette.

Firefighters were able to save some computers and documents from the ALTRAN office.  Administrative assistant Kim Monette says the fire caused well over $1 million in damage to the building and about 20 people are without a job, but no one was injured.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
