Phony cop stopping vehicles in Schoolcraft County

SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY, MI--   State police are telling drivers in Schoolcraft County to be on the lookout for a fake officer making traffic stops.

WLUC-TV says police have received multiple reports of a man in a brown uniform and gold badge stopping motorists. He has no patches or name tag, though he claims he’s a recently hired deputy with the Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department.

Witnesses say he’s driving a dark car—possibly a Dodge Charger. It may have a black brush guard on the front, a red and blue flashing light bar inside the windshield, and a spotlight.

Michigan State Police troopers and a detective are investigating the incidents.

Anyone with information regarding the man’s identity are asked to call the St. Ignace Post at 643-7582. Anyone who has been stopped by the man should report it to authorities.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
