Peters/Land debate unlikely

wxyz.com

DETROIT, MI (AP)--   Chances appear slim that a debate will be scheduled in the U.S. Senate race between Republican Terri Lynn Land and Democrat Gary Peters.

The two sides failed to reach an agreement before a Wednesday deadline set by WXYZ-TV.

Talks broke down over the debate format.

Peters wanted a town hall format in which voters ask most questions with follow-up from moderators. Land wanted a more traditional debate led by journalists.

As a last-ditch proposal, WXYZ in the Detroit area offered a format that included both preferences, but Peters' negotiator, John Cherry, says that wasn't acceptable.

Peters is reaching out to other potential debate hosts. Land spokeswoman Heather Swift says she, too, is open to more talks.

Land expressed interest in the WXYZ debate after declining other invitations.
