Pedestrian dies in car accident on US-2

MANISTIQUE, MI--   A vehicle hit and killed a pedestrian on US-2 near Manistique over the weekend. 

State Police from the St. Ignace Post say the crash happened Saturday afternoon near Walters Road in Manistique Township.  They say Leigh Peterson, 51, was hit by a vehicle driven by a 49-year-old Cornell man.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The highway was closed for a time while authorities cleared the scene. 

Assisting were Manistique Public Safety, the Department of Natural Resources, the Soo Tribe Police Department, the Michigan Department of Transportation, the Manistique Department of Public Works and off-duty Schoolcraft County deputies.

The accident remains under investigation. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
