Part of Marquette County trail to return to rail

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI (AP)--   The state has approved plans to accommodate a mining company in the Upper Peninsula by converting a stretch of recreational trail back to a rail line.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources Director Keith Creagh approved the move last week.

Returning the about two-mile section of the Iron Ore Heritage Trail to active rail line will provide Lundin Mining of Toronto with a way to haul ore concentrate from Humboldt Mill, a processing facility in Humboldt Township, to another rail line.

The mining company will pay for relocation of the trail segment.

Michigan has hundreds of miles of former rail lines that have been converted for recreational use. The law allows former rail lines to be converted back to rail use, if needed.
