Officials say Ishpeming fire could be arson

ISHPEMING, MI--   Police are trying to determine what caused a house fire that injured an Ishpeming woman Sunday.

Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched around 7:25 p.m. to #99 Sunny Side Estates and found it fully engulfed. The Sheriff’s Office had been to the same location that afternoon for a domestic situation between a man and woman. The man left the scene while the woman remained at the residence. Officers say the female subject made suicidal comments in the early evening and about 30 to 45 minutes before the fire began. She was found unconscious in the garage.

Police say alcohol and drug usage is suspected.

The woman was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of smoke inhalation.

The fire is being investigated as a possible arson.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
