Officials preparing for 50th anniversary of state's first rail trail

SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY, MI--   A series of mile markers is being installed along Michigan’s first rail trail in Schoolcraft County.

Nearly 50 years ago a concept to turn an abandoned railroad grade into the Haywire Grade was created. Now, a new partnership has kicked off plans for a 50th anniversary celebration in 2020. The coalition includes the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Hiawatha National Forest, City of Manistique, Hiawathaland Trail Association, and Schoolcraft County Motorized Trail Association.

As part of the celebration, mile markers containing historical references are being installed on the 32-mile route from Intake Park in Manistique to Shingleton.

DNR officials say they want the 50th anniversary to celebrate the important milestone for Michigan’s trail network and help trail users interact for years to come with the heritage of the area.
