U.P. nurses honored in Lansing

LANSING, MI--   Two UP Health System Marquette registered nurses have been honored by the Michigan Nurses Association.

Gayle St. Onge was presented with the Excellence in Nursing Practice award.  It recognizes patient advocacy, leadership abilities, and evidence-based nursing practice.

St. Onge has worked at the hospital for 25 years, mostly in the emergency department.

Wound care specialist Carolyn Hietamaki was inducted into the Michigan Nurses Hall of Fame.  Currently president of the UP Health System Marquette RN Staff Council and treasurer of the Michigan Nurses Association Board of Directors, Hietamaki has a long history of leadership at the local, state, and national level.

The women recently received their awards at the MNA’s 50th anniversary celebration in Lansing.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
