LANSING, MI (AP)-- The Michigan Senate's resistance to a proposed 40-percent increase in vehicle registration fees has delayed voting for at least another week on a road-funding plan.
A spokeswoman for Senate Majority Leader ArlanMeekhof says he is talking with other legislative leaders and Governor Rick Snyder to see if a compromise is within reach, a day after a vote was scheduled but not taken.
No formal meetings among all parties have been held since an impasse was declared two weeks ago after Democrats balked at the budget implications of Republican-backed income tax cuts.
House Republicans have since passed their own plan, with license plate fee hikes, a 3.3-cent gasoline tax increase, and an expanded tax credit for homeowners and renters.
Senators say the vehicle fee hike is too high.
