NMU selects FROST facility director

MARQUETTE, MI--    Northern Michigan University has named a director of its new Forensic Research Outdoor Station—or FROST.

Also known as a body farm, FROST is one of only eight such facilities across the nation and the first to study human decomposition in a cold climate.

Jane Wankmiller has been selected to oversee FROST, a forensic anthropology lab, and a human bone collection. Wankmiller previously worked as the Michigan State Police’s Unidentified Remains Coordinator in the Missing Persons Coordination Unit. She has conducted facial recognition searches to aid investigations, served as a forensic sketch artist, and is a certified death investigator.

Wankmiller holds a doctorate in physical anthropology and a master’s in forensic science from Michigan State University. She’ll develop courses for a bachelor’s degree in forensic anthropology at NMU.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
