MARQUETTE, MI-- Northern Michigan University is holding a public memorial to honor the life of former president William E. Vandament, who died last year.
Vandament was Northern’s tenth president, serving from 1991-1997. He implemented a flat-rate tuition structure that remains in place today and led the school through a series of budget reductions from the state.
NMU officials say Vandament was well-liked by faculty and students alike. He would often play with the pep band during athletic events.
The memorial will be held Monday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Vandament arena. It will feature the pep band, remarks from university and community officials, and the presentation of a plaque that will hang in the arena.
