NMU recognized for its help for student veterans

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University has been honored for its commitment to student veterans.

The university was recognized for helping student veterans transition from the military to college life through the Michigan Veteran Education Initiative.  It places veteran resources representatives, or VRRs, on campuses throughout the state through a partnership between the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency and Michigan College Access Network.

VRRs answer questions from veterans, faculty, and staff about admissions, financial aid and other related topics.  In the past 18 months VRRs have connected with more than 2,000 student veterans and assisted them in claiming more than $5 million in benefits.

NMU was one of 15 colleges and universities in Michigan to be honored.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
