MARQUETTE, MI-- A group of Northern Michigan University women with advanced degrees has come together to mentor and encourage other women to pursue their master’s or doctorate.
Women-Leadership-Inquiry-Action is a new campus and community initiative designed to support women going for advanced degrees. Heather Pickett is the director of NMU’s McNair Scholars Program. She says she thinks many people shy away from graduate school because they don’t have time or think they’re not smart enough.
“Really it’s a lot more about persistence than intelligence, and there’s a lot that’s been done with the format that makes it a lot more doable. And getting a Master’s degree or a PhD for a lot of people can open a lot of doors, professionally,” she says.
WLIA is hosting Conversations about Graduate School Monday at 5 p.m. in Jamrich Hall, Room 1322. It will feature four faculty panelists who will talk about their experiences in grad school.
The event is open to both campus and the community.
