NMU closes case on student death, memorial planned

MARQUETTE, MI--   Northern Michigan University officials have closed their investigation into a student’s death.

Monica Matus, 22, of Chicago was found in her Woodland Park apartment Friday afternoon.  No foul play is suspected.

An autopsy was performed Monday in Marquette.  But university officials say the results are available only to the family, as Matus’ death was not a university-related incident.

A memorial service is being held Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home in Marquette.  A sunrise flower petal ceremony will also take place Thursday at 8 a.m., starting at the Coast Guard lighthouse and moving to McCarty’s Cove.

Matus’ obituary is posted on the Canale-Tonella Funeral Home website.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
