NMU Board approves North Star, supports road commission

MARQUETTE, MI--   The NMU Board of Trustees has reauthorized the university’s charter with North Star Academy.

Northern president Fritz Erickson says the academy has made progress in academics and contract compliance, although its fund balance remains a concern.  He says reorganization of the school’s administration will hopefully lead to more financial sustainability.

The two-year contract goes into effect July 1 and could be extended two more years if North Star achieves its goals.

In other action Tuesday the University Board approved a motion to formally support the Marquette County Road Commission in its appeal of an EPA decision to deny a permit to build County Road 595.  Trustees said they’re concerned about student safety with increased mine truck traffic through campus.

The road would connect County Road AAA in Michigamme Township with US-41 in Humboldt Township.  The EPA said the project would destroy too many acres of wetlands.
