Newberry based company receives award

NEWBERRY-- The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has presented one of its highest environmental stewardship honors to a corporation in Newberry. Louisiana-Pacific Corporation becomes the 175th Michigan facility to receive this honor.

The LP facility earned designation as a member of the state's Clean Corporate Citizen Program in April.

The C3 Program is a voluntary environmental program that recognizes environmental stewardship at Michigan facilities. Candidates demonstrate facility?specific environmental management systems, active pollution prevention initiatives, and a consistent record of compliance with state and federal environmental requirements.

The LP Newberry plant employs 115 people who produce LP SmartSide siding and other engineered wood products.

Matthew Hieshetter, LP Newberry plant environmental manager, credited much of the award to the employees and Environmental Management System team at the facility, who initiated and continue to drive many environmental projects that are an integral part of the C3 Program.

An open house is planned for July 11, including plant tours and refreshments. The event is open to the public.

Hans Ahlström is the host of several programs including the daily musical variety show Weekday, the mostly straight ahead jazz show Night Studio, the self explanatory Blues Today, and the eclectic Sound Spectrum. You can also hear Hans as the local host of NPR's All Things Considered news magazine. He also helps manage Public Radio 90's web content, interviews local and visiting writers and artists, works with NMU student interns, and writes the occasional news story.
