New Year's Day fire injures Marquette resident

MARQUETTE, MI--   One person was injured when a fire broke out in a Marquette residence Sunday morning.

Firefighters were called to 235 West Bluff Street around 7 a.m. and found a mattress in flames on the sidewalk.  An occupant had apparently dragged the burning mattress out of a second-floor bedroom.

Firefighters searched the rest of the house for fire, but found none.  They ventilated the building to get rid of residual smoke.

The resident was taken to UPHS Marquette for treatment of burns.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
