New VISA scam making the rounds

BESSEMER, MI--   The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office wants people to be aware of the latest scam involving VISA that’s making its way through the Midwest.

Officials say the caller already has your credit card number, and they’re trying to get one more piece of information in order to use it. They’ll identify themselves as being with the Security and Fraud Department at VISA, then ask if you made a purchase just under $500 from a certain company. The victim says no, and the caller says they’ll issue a credit for the purchase and a fraud investigation will be launched.

At this point the scammer will say he or she needs to make certain the victim is in possession of the card, and will ask for the security code—the three digits on the back of the card. Officials say anyone who receives a call like this should never give the security code, since it lets the scammer start charging the card.

The real VISA will never ask anyone for information about their credit card, as they already have it.

If you get a call like this one, hang up and call the company number on the back of the card to verify no unauthorized charges have been made on your account.
