New scam purportedly from Michigan State Police

NEGAUNEE, MI--   Phone scammers in Marquette County are now pretending to be from the Michigan State Police.

Troopers from the Negaunee Post say in the new scheme callers say they are members of the MSP and ask for money or other personal information. They use software that makes the caller ID number look like it’s actually from the State Police.

As of Thursday, at least three residents have reported receiving such a call.

Troopers say never give out personal information over the phone to someone you don’t know. Confirm the identity of a contact by speaking with the identified source, like your bank, credit card company, or government agency, and report any suspicious contacts to police.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
