New $3.8M, 85-foot Mackinac Island ferry heads to dock

MACKINAW CITY, MI (AP)--   The newest ferry in a Mackinac Island fleet is making its way to its dock in northern Michigan.

Shepler'sMackinac Island Ferry said Wednesday that its new $3.8 million, 85-foot ship was being transported by land to the water in Rogers City. The ferry is expected to then make the trip by water to its dock in Mackinaw City by Friday.

The ferry named "Miss Margy" was built at Moran Iron Works in Onaway. The 281-passenger ferry is the largest of Shepler's fleet and has a top speed of about 40 miles per hour.

Shepler's says its CEO, Bill Shepler, and Governor Rick Snyder are expected to christen the ferry July 12, and that it will carry its first passengers a few weeks later.
