MARQUETTE, MI-- Northern Michigan University will be the first school in Michigan to offer a Native American Studies major next year.
The Board of Trustees approved a recommendation by its academic affairs committee to create the major on the heels of the university’s already-existing Native Studies minor. NMU will offer the major beginning with the fall semester of 2016.
Center Director April Lindala says the move will not only enhance relationships with tribal communities in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota, but will also highlight the important role Native Americans play in the area’s region and culture.
The major will offer students an interdisciplinary approach to Native American issues.
