Muskellunge stocking complete

LANSING, MI (AP)--   State wildlife managers have finished a fall stocking program that added 36,228 muskellunge fingerlings to 21 lakes, rivers and other Michigan waterways.

The 8- to 9-inch-long fish were placed in locations as varied as Belleville Lake in Wayne County, the Grand River's Indian Channel in Ottawa County, Lake Winyah in Alpena County and Marquette County's Teal Lake.

The Department of Natural Resources says Great Lakes muskellunge also were stocked in Lake Michigan's Little Bay de Noc the first effort to restore that strain of fish to its native waters. Michigan is home to two strains of naturally producing muskellunge: the Great Lakes and the Northern.

The DNR rears the young muskellunge at Wolf Lake State Fish Hatchery in Mattawan.
