Mural project seeks to showcase downtown Sault Ste. Marie

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI (AP)--   Plans are in the works for four murals as part of an effort to showcase arts and cultural offerings in Sault Ste. Marie.

Organizers of the "Downtown Sault Ste. Marie Mural Project" are seeking $16,000 by July 15 to boost the project.

The crowdfunding campaign involves the Michigan Economic Development Corp., the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and the City of Sault Ste. Marie Downtown Development Authority. It comes as the city prepares to mark its 350th anniversary in 2018.

The murals will be completed by local artists. They're planned on walls at Pingatore Cleaners, Island Books & Crafts and the Alpha Bar. The fourth location will be on 1668 Winery & Lockside Brewery and will seek to draw tourists to downtown from the Soo Locks.
