Multiple snowmobile crash in Keweenaw kills woman

PHOENIX, MI--   An Illinois woman has been killed in a multiple snowmobile accident in Keweenaw County’s Allouez Township.

Sheriff’s deputies say it happened Sunday around 11:50 a.m. on Trail No. 3 about a mile south of US-41 in Phoenix.  The crash resulted in the death of Denise Hesse, 46, and injured another male driver.  He was taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the accident, which remains under investigation. 

The Allouez Township Medical First Responders, Ahmeek Village Fire and Rescue, Michigan DNR, Mercy Ambulance, and Keweenaw Trails Services assisted at the scene.  

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
