MPSC holding Q&A on UP energy next week

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Michigan Public Service Commission is holding a panel discussion and question-and-answer session on the U.P.’s energy future next week.

Electric reliability, affordability, and environmental protection will be some of the issues covered.

The meeting centers around the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission’s demand that the Presque Isle Power Plant in Marquette be kept open to keep the power supply reliable in the Midwest.  That means every U.P. electricity provider will have to pay a portion of the $117 million yearly bill, and customer’s bills will get bigger.

Plant owner WE Energies had intended to close the plant after its biggest customers—the Empire and Tilden mines—went with a different energy provider.

The meeting takes place Tuesday from noon to 1 p.m. in the Brule room of NMU’s University Center.  State Senator Tom Casperson and State Representative John Kivela will moderate the discussion.

It’s part of the U.P. Energy Summit being held from 8:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Tuesday in the Great Lakes Rooms of the University Center.
