HOUGHTON, MI (AP)--   A mountain biking race that serves as a fundraiser for Michigan Tech's cross country, Nordic skiing and track and field teams has made its debut.

The Daily Mining Gazette of Houghton reports Michigan Tech Athletics held the Keweenaw Tread Fest on Saturday on the school's trail system. Events included 12- and 25-mile races as well as youth events. The newspaper says Tread Fest drew 82 racers.

Joe Haggenmiller is head coach for cross country, Nordic skiing and track and field at the Upper Peninsula school. He says the first event was "an outstanding day."

Haggenmiller says organizers hope to increase the number of participants in future years.
