Motorcycle rider not wearing helmet suffers serious injuries in accident

ONOTA TOWNSHIP, MI--   One person was seriously injured in a two-motorcycle crash in Alger County near the Marquette County line Saturday.

Around 3 p.m. troopers from the Negaunee Post were dispatched to M-28 just west of Sand River Road for an accident involving bikes that were both towing small trailers.

They say William Vaillancourt, 65, of downstate Sanford crashed his motorcycle into the back of another that was slowing to turn off the highway. The second motorcycle was driven by Terry Whittington, 51, of Midland, who was traveling with Vaillancourt.

Vaillancourt was not wearing a helmet and suffered serious injury. Whittington, who was wearing a helmet, received only minor injuries. Both were taken to UPSH Marquette for treatment.

Chocolay Township Police and Onota Township Fire and First Responders assisted at the scene.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
