LANSING, MI (AP)-- Michigan Superintendent Mike Flanagan says he'll move more failing schools into a statewide district, and more should be transferred there than he previously indicated.
Flanagan on Tuesday announced that "many more" than 10 schools should join 15 Detroit schools in the Education Achievement Authority as early as January. He previously said fewer than 10 schools would go into the district.
All schools in the bottom 5 percent come under supervision of the Michigan school reform office. The "priority" schools get extra help from the state to improve.
Now the state is planning to put more of them under direct control of the state authority that is contentious among lawmakers.
Governor Rick Snyder is pushing legislation to codify the authority into law and let it take the reins at more schools.
