LANSING, MI (AP)-- Michigan's expansion of medical insurance under the federal health law hangs in the balance at the U.S. Supreme Court and inside the Obama administration.
The court in coming days will rule on the legality of tax subsidies for 228,000 Michigan residents who bought insurance through a federal marketplace. And on Wednesday, Gov. Rick Snyder's administration held a public hearing in Lansing on a waiver it must receive from the federal government by year's end or else 600,000 residents will lose Medicaid in 2016.
Jackie Prokop, director of Michigan's Medicaid program policy division, says "there's a lot at stake" with the waiver.
Michigan needs permission so adults enrolled for four years in the Medicaid expansion program have to buy insurance through the government exchange or pay more to stay on Medicaid.
