HOUGHTON, MI (AP)-- Michigan Tech wants to transform the basement of its student union into a laboratory that turns ideas into reality prototypes.
The Daily Mining Gazette reports that Memorial Union's basement used to be a bowling alley. About 100 students, faculty and staff recently gathered at the union to brainstorm its transformation into a "makerspace." A makerspace is a lab, workshop and hangout where anyone at the university can go to turn ideas into prototypes.
Ideas focused on making the space a fun and creative environment.
The university board of trustees has requested an even larger makerspace in its funding wish list sent to the Michigan Legislature.
