Michigan searching for next Christmas tree

LANSING, MI--   Even though it’s only May, the search is on for the next state Christmas tree.

Officials from the Department of Technology, Management & Budget say nominees must be a spruce or fir, at least 55-feet tall with a maximum crown of 24 feet and a maximum trunk diameter of 30 inches, within easy access of a road with no interference from wires, and available at no cost.

The department works with the Michigan Association of Timbermen and the Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association to bring the tree to Lansing. Last year it came from Sault Ste. Marie.

Nominations are requested by July 30th. Thos who want to nominate a tree can send their name, telephone number, a photograph of the tree and information about its size and location to Christmastree@michigan.gov.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
