Michigan joblessness up

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Michigan says the seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate has risen statewide and on most of its regional labor markets.

The Department of Technology, Management & Budget said Thursday that the statewide unadjusted jobless rate was 9.7 percent in July, compared with 9.4 percent in June.

That follows a 1 percentage point jump from May to June.

The department says July unemployment rates ranged from a low of 7.2 percent in the Ann Arbor region to a high of 11.3 percent in the northeastern Lower Peninsula. It says the rate was 10.4 percent in the populous Detroit area.

The state says the increases reflect typical seasonal employment changes.
