LANSING, MI (AP)-- Michigan courts are finalizing more than 120 adoptions during the state's annual Adoption Day.
Five of the state's seven Supreme Court justices are among judges participating in adoption ceremonies across Michigan on Tuesday. There are 36 events scheduled where adoptions will be finalized or informational events will be held for potential adoptive parents.
Chief Justice Robert Young Jr. says the day traditionally held near Thanksgiving is aimed at raising awareness and encouraging adoptive and foster parents to step forward. He says "every child deserves a loving, forever home."
Michigan has 13,000 children in the foster care system, including 2,400 whose parents' rights have been terminated and have a goal of adoption. More than 1,700 Michigan children were adopted in the last fiscal year through the state or private adoption agencies.
