Michigan corrections officer stabbed in attack by inmate

MARQUETTE, MI (AP)--   An official says a corrections officer was stabbed and another suffered scrapes in an attack by an inmate at the Marquette Branch Prison.

The Detroit Free Press reports the stabbing happened Tuesday. Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz says the officer who was stabbed had superficial puncture wounds in the arm and head.

Gautz says the other officer, who responded and helped to restrain the inmate inside a housing unit, was injured. Both officers were treated and released.

The inmate, who is serving a life sentence, was transferred to another prison. Authorities are investigating how the inmate got a weapon and what prompted the attack. Gautz says it appears that the inmate took issue with an order from the officer.
