MI Secretary of State orders U.P. auto shops to stop repairs

MANISTIQUE, MI--   The Michigan Secretary of State has issued cease and desist orders against two unlicensed auto repair facilities in Manistique.

On Friday Secretary of State Ruth Johnson said her office sent orders to Bergy’s Auto Repair on US-2, which has been operating without a license since January 31, 2013.  Owner Charles Berglund’s mechanic certification also expired on May 22, 2014.

Orders were also sent to David Sundling, who has been operating a repair shop on US-2 without any facility registration or mechanic certification.

Consumers who have a complaint against either facility are encouraged to call the Department of State’s Regulatory Monitoring Division at 517-335-1410.  Under Michigan law a customer can recover any amount paid to an unregistered facility for a repair to their vehicle.

Berglund and Sundling face up to 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine if they continue to provide auto repair services.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
