MGH given donor award in honor of Sanaz Nezami

MARQUETTE, MI--   Marquette General Hospital is being honored by Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson for it recent organ donation efforts.  The Shining Star Award is given for exceptional dedication and/or extraordinary efforts in the area of organ and tissue donor awareness.

MGH is receiving the award for the care given to Sanaz Nezami—an Iranian doctoral student at Michigan Tech who suffered a traumatic brain injury at the hands of her husband.

ICU nurses set up a video chat with her family in Iran, who couldn’t travel to the U.S.  The family then asked nurses to stroke Sanaz’s hair or kiss her forehead while they watched from thousands of miles away.  They were able to say their goodbyes by computer.

Sanaz Nezami died December 12 of last year, but donation of her organs saved the lives of seven people in five states.

Presentation of the Shining Star Award will take place Thursday at 1 p.m. at Marquette General Hospital.
