Meth-related materials found at Escanaba dump site

ESCANABA, MI--   Escanaba Public Safety officials have confirmed the presence of a methamphetamine dump site in the city.

Officers were called Monday around 1 p.m. to the 800 block of South 13th Street on a report that some pop bottles were emitting noxious fumes.  They were found in a recycling bin in the alley of the homeowner who discovered the site.  The homeowner said they were disposing of recyclables when they inhaled the fumes and felt a burning sensation in their lungs.  The person sought treatment at OSF St. Francis Hospital and was released.

Escanaba Police notified the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team’s Narcotics Unit.  UPSET cleaned up the scene and disposed of the hazardous materials.

Authorities are warning the public to be cautious if they encounter unusual items in and around garbage/recycling bins, alleys, woods, yards, and parks.  They include 2-liter pop bottles with rust-colored sludge inside, lithium batteries that are cut in half or pulled apart, plastic bottles with small rubber tubing attached, and coffee filters stained with rust-colored residue.

If any of these items are found and are emitting noxious fumes, do not touch and call law enforcement immediately.
