Marriages continue at Midland County courthouse

MIDLAND, MI (AP)--   Three Midland County judges say the courts will still perform marriages, despite a colleague's statement that he wouldn't do so in the aftermath of the U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding the right of same-sex couples to marry.

Midland District Michael D. Carpenter tells the Midland Daily News he read the high court's decision and reviewed his court rules, realizing judges aren't required to officiate at marriages.

The ex-Midland County prosecutor says he decided to stop conducting marriages as one of several cost-cutting moves after staffing cuts.

On Wednesday, county Chief Judge Stephen Carras and two colleagues wrote that they're "making sure that people who want to get married are able to do so in their courthouse."

County Clerk Ann Manary tells The Saginaw News she'll officiate at courthouse weddings.
