Marquette's Superior Bike Fest canceled

MARQUETTE, MI (WNMU) - This year’s Superior Bike Fest in Marquette has been canceled.

In a press conference Thursday afternoon co-race director Jim Grundstrom said although officials had one of the best planning years so far, as of Wednesday night only 58 riders were registered for the June 24-26 race. Normally more than 500 riders sign up for the event.

Grundstrom said with only six weeks to go before the race officials had to think about purchasing shirts, cowbells, and awards for the racers, and there just isn’t enough money to make ends meet. Organizers are returning money that’s already come in from riders and sponsors.

The Bike Fest, which features a criterium, road races, and a mountain chase, benefits the Y’s Strong Kids Campaign and the Marquette Mountain Ski Patrol.

Grundstrom says while the event is canceled this year, that doesn’t mean that the Superior Bike Fest is over for good.
