Marquette's Lambros Park project still up in the air

MARQUETTE, MI--   A Marquette business owner and city officials are still trying to work out a deal to construct a new park near Presque Isle.

Michelle Butler’s family wants to donate a 10.2-acre parcel of beach from Hawley Street north to the Dead River bridge for the construction of Clark Lambros Beach Park.  Lambros was both Butler’s business partner and longtime love.

But the city commission has put the project on hold.  Concerns include whether a structure should be built on the land; if $250,000 from Butler will cover repairs and future expansion; and if 500 feet not included in the gift will be public or private.

The project has been in the works for two and a half years.  The commission must address the issue within 30 days.  It’s planning a work session to iron out details.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
