Marquette Township man dies after three nights in the woods

NEGAUNEE TOWNSHIP, MI (WNMU) – A Marquette Township man has died of exposure, after spending three nights in the woods with his wife.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office says the 62-year-old man went on an ORV ride with his 62-year-old wife Friday afternoon. The machine became stuck in the mud around 4 p.m. about a mile east of County Road 510 near trail 14 in Negaunee Township.

The woman began to walk to seek help, but was unable to find anyone. She returned to the ORV, and the two spent three nights outdoors without food or warm clothing.

Monday around 9:50 a.m. the woman made her way to CR 510 and was able to flag down a passerby. She was taken to Marquette General Hospital, treated for exposure, and released.

Deputies say her husband died at some point over the weekend. His body was recovered Monday.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
