Marquette named safe college town

MARQUETTE, MI--   The City of Marquette has been named the 21st safest college town in America, according to The SafeWise Report.

Security experts from SafeWise evaluated the most recent FBI crime statistics and coupled that data with their own research on safety-related programs and initiatives.  That culminated in 2015’s “50 Safest College Towns in America.”

SafeWise says crime prevention is important in Marquette.  The City Police has a Youth Services Bureau, which organizes preventative and education programs.  Northern Michigan University also has a Crime Prevention Unit, which offers Rape Aggression Defense courses and reaches out to community organizations and the greater U.P.

NMU has also been placed in the top 112 of U.S. News and World Report’s 2015 edition of Best Colleges.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
