Marquette man arrested for hundreds of graffiti incidents
MARQUETTE, MI-- A Marquette man has been arrested for writing graffiti around the city.
On Monday police responded to the 500 block of Hawley Street on a report of a man tagging a dumpster. A witness saw the event, then saw the suspect jump on a bike, stop to write on a sign, and leave the area.
Police obtained a description of the suspect and shortly thereafter observed him near the back door of a business on Presque Isle pulling an object—believed to be a magic marker—out of his pocket. Officers chased the man several blocks until he fled into the woods. The subject eventually emerged and was arrested.
police say Alexander John Watanen, 25, is charged with resisting and obstructing an officer, two counts of malicious destruction of personal property, and malicious destruction of a building.
Watanen allegedly wrote the word “Gerko” on the dumpster. Police say the same word is found in hundreds of locations around Marquette and Marquette Township.
Additional charges may be pending.
