Marquette honored for using salt well in winter

MARQUETTE, MI--   The City of Marquette has won an award from the Salt Institute. 

The 2012 Safe and Sustainable Snow Fighting Award was given to communities who effectively manage the storage of winter road salt and exhibit environmental consciousness.  Winners also use best management practices to protect public safety during winter road maintenance.  

Marquette has won the Excellence in Salt Storage Award every year since 1994.  This year the award changed to the Safe and Sustainable Snow Fighting Award when criteria was expanded to include good housekeeping practices. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
